Revised Hamidullah, 2000Context
X
Le fer (Al-Hadid)
1

Note [original edition] : Son serviteur = Mahomet.
          10
Note [original edition] : al-Fatḥ « le Succès ».

Note [original edition] : Ce vt. soulève plusieurs questions.

All that is in the heavens and the earth magnifies God; He is the All-mighty, the All-wise.
                      2
To Him belongs the Kingdom of the heavens and the earth; He gives life, and He makes to die, and He is powerful over everything.
                      3
He is the First and the Last, the Outward and the Inward; He has knowledge of everything.
                      4
It is He that created the heavens and the earth in six days then seated Himself upon the Throne. He knows what penetrates into the earth, and what comes forth from it, -- what comes down from heaven, and what goes up unto it. He is with you wherever you are; and God sees the things you do.
                      5
To Him belongs the Kingdom of the heavens and the earth; and unto Him all matters are returned.

Believe in God and His Messenger, and expend of that unto which He has made you successors. And those of you who believe and expend shall have a mighty wage.
                      8
How is it with you, that you believe not in God seeing that the Messenger is calling you to believe in your Lord, and He has taken compact with you, if you are believers?
                      9
It is He who sends down upon His servant signs, clear signs, that He may bring you forth from the shadows into the light. Surely God is to you All-gentle, All-compassionate.
                      10
How is it with you, that you expend not in the way of God, and to God belongs the inheritance of the heavens and the earth? Not equal is he among you who spent, and who fought before the victory; those are mightier in rank than they who spent and fought afterwards; and unto each God has promised the reward most fair; and God is aware of the things you do.
                      11
Who is he that will lend to God a good loan, and He will multiply it for him, and his shall be a generous wage?
                      12
Upon the day when thou seest the believers, men and women, their light running before them, and on their right hands. ‘Good tidings for you today! Gardens underneath which rivers flow, therein to dwell for ever; that is indeed the mighty triumph.’
                      13
Upon the day when the hypocrites, men and women, shall say to those who have believed, ‘Wait for us, so that we may borrow your light!’ It shall be said, ‘Return you back behind, and seek for a light!’ And a wall shall be set up between them, having a door in the inward whereof is mercy, and against the outward thereof is chastisement.
                      14
They shall be calling unto them, ‘Were we not with you?’ They shall say, ‘Yes indeed; but you tempted yourselves, and you awaited, and you were in doubt, and fancies deluded you, until God’s commandment came, and the Deluder deluded you concerning God.
                      15
Therefore today no ransom shall be taken from you, neither from those who disbelieved. Your refuge is the Fire, that is your master -- an evil homecoming!’
                      16
Is it not time that the hearts of those who believe should be humbled to the Remembrance of God and the Truth which He has sent down, and that they should not be as those to whom the Book was given aforetime, and the term seemed over long to them, so that their hearts have become hard, and many of them are ungodly?
                      17
Know that God revives the earth after it was dead. We have indeed made clear for you the signs, that haply you will understand.
                      18
Surely those, the men and the women, who make freewill offerings and have lent to God a good loan, it shall be multiplied for them, and theirs shall be a generous wage.
                      19
And those who believe in God and His Messengers -- they are the just men and the martyrs in their Lord’s sight; they have their wage, and their light. But the unbelievers, who have cried lies to Our signs, they are the inhabitants of Hell.
                      20
Know that the present life is but a sport and a diversion, an adornment and a cause for boasting among you, and a rivalry in wealth and children. It is as a rain whose vegetation pleases the unbelievers; then it withers, and thou seest it turning yellow, then it becomes broken orts. And in the world to come there is a terrible chastisement, and forgiveness from God and good pleasure; and the present life is but the joy of delusion.
                      21
Race to forgiveness from your Lord, and a Garden the breadth whereof is as the breadth of heaven and earth, made ready for those who believe in God and His Messengers. That is the bounty of God; He gives it unto whomsoever He will; and God is of bounty abounding.
                      22
                      No affliction befalls in the earth or in yourselves, but it is in a Book, before We create it; that is easy for God;
                      23
that you may not grieve for what escapes you, nor rejoice in what has come to you; God loves not any man proud and boastful,
                      24
such as are niggardly, and bid men to be niggardly. And whosoever turns away, God is the All-sufficient, the All-laudable.
                      25
Indeed, We sent Our Messengers with the clear signs, and We sent down with them the Book and the Balance so that men might uphold justice. And We sent down iron, wherein is great might, and many uses for men, and so that God might know who helps Him, and His Messengers, in the Unseen. Surely God is All-strong, All-mighty.
                      26
And We sent Noah, and Abraham, and We appointed the Prophecy and the Book to be among their seed; and some of them are guided, and many of them are ungodly.
                      27
Then We sent, following in their footsteps, Our Messengers; and We sent, following, Jesus son of Mary, and gave unto him the Gospel. And We set in the hearts of those who followed him tenderness and mercy. And monasticism they invented -- We did not prescribe it for them -- only seeking the good pleasure of God; but they observed it not as it should be observed. So We gave those of them who believed their wage; and many of them are ungodly.
                      28
                      O believers, fear God, and believe in His Messenger, and He will give you a twofold portion of His mercy; and He will appoint for you a light whereby you shall walk, and forgive you; God is All-forgiving, All-compassionate;
                      29
that the People of the Book may know that they have no power over anything of God’s bounty, and that bounty is in the hand of God; He gives it unto whomsoever He will; and God is of bounty abounding."

                      8
What aileth you that ye believe not in Allah, when the messenger calleth you to believe in your Lord, and He hath already made a covenant with you, if ye are believers?

And what aileth you that ye spend not in the way of Allah when unto Allah belongeth the inheritance of the heavens and the earth? Those who spent and fought before the victory are not upon a level (with the rest of you). Such are greater in rank than those who spent and fought afterwards. Unto each hath Allah promised good. And Allah is Informed of what ye do.
                      11
Who is he that will lend unto Allah a goodly loan, that He may double it for him and his may be a rich reward?
                      12
On the day when thou (Muḥammad) wilt see the believers, men and women, their light shining forth before them and on their right hands, (and wilt hear it said unto them): Glad news for you this day: Gardens underneath which rivers flow, wherein ye are immortal. That is the supreme triumph.
                      13
On the day when the hypocritical men and the hypocritical women will say unto those who believe: Look on us that we may borrow from your light! it will be said: Go back and seek for light! Then there will separate them a wall wherein is a gate, the inner side whereof containeth mercy, while the outer side thereof is toward the doom.
                      14
                      They will cry unto them (saying): Were we not with you? They will say: Yea, verily; but ye tempted one another, and hesitated, and doubted, and vain desires beguiled you till the ordinance of Allah came to pass; and the deceiver deceived you concerning Allah;
                      15
So this day no ransom can be taken from you nor from those who disbelieved. Your home is the Fire; that is your patron, and a hapless journey’s end.
                      16
Is not the time ripe for the hearts of those who believe to submit to Allah’s reminder and to the truth which is revealed, that they become not as those who received the scripture of old but the term was prolonged for them and so their hearts were hardened, and many of them are evil-livers.
                      17
Know that Allah quickeneth the earth after its death. We have made clear Our revelations for you, that haply ye may understand.
                      18
Lo! those who give alms, both men and women, and lend unto Allah a goodly loan, it will be doubled for them, and theirs will be a rich reward.
                      19
And those who believe in Allah and His messengers, they are the loyal, and the martyrs are with their Lord; they have their reward and their light; while as for those who disbelieve and deny Our revelations, they are owners of hell-fire.
                      20
Know that the life of the world is only play, and idle talk, and pageantry, and boasting among you, and rivalry in respect of wealth and children; as the likeness of vegetation after rain, whereof the growth is pleasing to the husbandman, but afterward it drieth up and thou seest it turning yellow, then it becometh straw. And in the Hereafter there is grievous punishment, and (also) forgiveness from Allah and His good pleasure, whereas the life of the world is but matter of illusion.
                      21
Race one with another for forgiveness from your Lord and a Garden whereof the breadth is as the breadth of the heavens and the earth, which is in store for those who believe in Allah and His messengers. Such is the bounty of Allah, which He bestoweth upon whom He will, and Allah is of Infinite Bounty.

That ye grieve not for the sake of that which hath escaped you, nor yet exult because of that which hath been given. Allah loveth not all prideful boasters,

Who hoard and who enjoin upon the people avarice. And whosoever turneth away, still Allah is the Absolute, the Owner of Praise.
                      25
We verily sent Our messengers with clear proofs, and revealed with them the Scripture and the Balance, that mankind may observe right measure; and He revealed iron, wherein is mighty power and (many) uses for mankind, and that Allah may know him who helpeth Him and His messengers, though unseen. Then We caused Our messengers to follow in their footsteps; and We caused Jesus, son of Mary, to follow, and gave him the Gospel, and placed compassion and mercy in the hearts of those who followed him. But monasticism they invented - We ordained it not for them - only seeking Allah’s pleasure, and they observed it not with right observance. So We give those of them who believe their reward, but many of them are evil-livers.
                      28
                      O ye who believe! Be mindful of your duty to Allah and put faith in His messenger. He will give you twofold of His mercy and will appoint for you a light wherein ye shall walk, and will forgive you. Allah is Forgiving, Merciful;
                      29
That the People of the Scripture may know that they control naught of the bounty of Allah, but that the bounty is in Allah’s hand to give to whom He will. And Allah is of Infinite Bounty.

In the name of the most merciful God.
                          1
WHATEVER is in heaven and earth singeth praise unto God; and he is mighty and wise.
                          2
His is the kingdom of heaven and earth; he giveth life, and he putteth to death; and he is almighty.
                          3
He is the first, and the last; the manifest and the hidden: and he knoweth all things.
                          4
It is he who created the heavens and the earth in six days, and then ascended his throne. He knoweth that which entereth into the earth, and that which issueth out of the same, and that which descendeth from heaven, and that which ascendeth thereto: and he is with you, wheresoever ye be: for God seeth that which ye do.
                          5
His is the kingdom of heavens and earth; and unto God shall all things return.
                          6
He causeth the night to succeed the day, and he causeth the day to succeed the night; and he knowest the innermost part of men’s breasts.
                          7
Believe in God and his apostle, and lay out in alms a part of the wealth whereof God hath made you inheritors: for unto such of you as believe, and bestow alms, shall be given a great reward.
                          8
And what aileth you, that ye believe not in God, when the apostle inviteth you to believe in your Lord; and he hath received your covenant

It is he who hath sent down unto his servant evident signs, that he may lead you out of darkness into light; for God is compassionate and merciful unto you.

And what aileth you, that ye contribute not of your substance for the defence of God’s true religion? Since unto God appertaineth the inheritance of heaven and earth. Those among you who shall have contributed and fought in defence of the faith, before the taking of Mecca, shall not be held equal with those who shall contribute and fight for the same afterwards
                            a
Note [original edition] : Those who shall have contributed and fought in defence of the faith before the taking of Mecca, shall not be held equal with those who shall contribute after;] Because afterwards there was not so great necessity for either, the Mohammedan religion being firmly established by that great success.
. These shall be superior in degree unto those who shall contribute and fight for the propagation of the faith, after the above mentioned success: but unto all hath God promised a most excellent reward; and God well knoweth that which ye do.

On a certain day, thou shalt see the true believers of both sexes: their light shall run before them, and on their right hands
                              b
Note [original edition] : Their light shall run before them, and on their right hands;] One light leading them the right way to paradise, and the other proceeding from the book wherein their actions are recorded, which they will hold in their right hand.
; and it shall be said unto them, Good tidings unto you this day: gardens through which rivers flow; ye shall remain therein forever. This will be great felicity.
                                13
On that day the hypocritical men and the hypocritical women shall say unto those who believe, Stay for us
                                c
Note [original edition] : Stay for us;] For the righteous will hasten to paradise swift as lightning.
, what we may borrow some of your light. It shall be answered, Return back into the world, and seek light. And a high wall shall be set betwixt them, wherein shall be a gate, within which shall be mercy; and without it, over against the same, the torment of hell.
                                  14
The hypocrites shall call out unto the true believers, saying, Were we not with you? They shall answer, Yea; but ye seduced your own souls by your hypocrisy; and ye waited our ruin; and ye doubted concerning the faith; and your wishes deceived you, until the decree of God came, and ye died: and the deceiver deceived you concerning God.
                                  15
This day, therefore, a ransom shall not be accepted of you, nor of those who have been unbelievers. Your abode shall be hell fire: this is what ye have deserved; and an unhappy journey shall it be thither!
                                  16
Is not the time yet come unto those who believe, that their hearts should humbly submit to the admonition of God, and to that truth which hath been revealed; and that they be not as those unto whom the scripture was given heretofore, and to whom the time of forbearance was prolonged, but their hearts were hardened, and many of them were wicked doers?
                                  17
Know that God quickeneth the earth, after it hath been dead. Now have we distinctly declared our signs unto you, that ye may understand.
                                  18
Verily as to the almsgivers, both men and women, and those who lend unto God an acceptable loan, he will double the same unto them; and they shall moreover receive an honourable reward.
                                  19
And they who believe in God and his apostles, these are the men of veracity, and the witnesses in the presence of their Lord: they shall have their reward, and their light. But as to those who believe not, and accuse our signs of

                                  20
Know that this present life is only a toy and a vain amusement: and worldly pomp, and the affectation of glory among you, and the multiplying of riches and children, are as the plants nourished by the rain, the springing up whereof delighteth the husbandmen; afterwards they wither, so that thou seest the same turned yellow, and at length they become dry stubble. And in the life to come will be a severe punishment for those who covet worldly grandeur; and pardon from God, and favour for those who renounce it: for this present life is no other than a deceitful provision.
                                  21
Hasten with emulation to obtain pardon from your Lord, and paradise, the extent whereof equalleth the extent of heaven and earth, prepared for those who believe in God and his apostles. This is the bounty of God: he will give the same unto whom he pleaseth; and God is indued with great bounty.
                                  22
No accident happeneth in the earth, nor in your persons, but the same was entred in the book of our decrees, before we created it: verily this is easy with God:

and this is written lest ye immoderately grieve for the good which escapeth you, or rejoice for that which happened unto you; for God loveth no proud or vain-glorious person,

We formerly sent Noah and Abraham, and we established in their posterity the gift of prophecy, and the scripture: and of them some were directed, but many of them were evil doers.

And we gave unto such of them as believed their reward: but many of them were wicked doers.

                                            MECCANA :
                                            COMMATUM VIGINTI NOVEM.
                                            1
                                            3
                                            3.  Ipse est Primus, & Novissimus ; & Apparens, & Ocultus ; & ipse est in omni re sciens.
                                            4
                                            6
                                            6.  Immittit noctem in diem, & immittit diem in noctem : & ipse est sciens essentiam pectorum.
                                            7
                                            12
                                            12.  Die quadam videbis fideles viros, ac fideles mulieres  : discurret lux eorum ante eos, & in dextris eorum : & dicetur illis  : Faustum nuncium vobis hodie : horti, sub quibus currunt flumina : perpetuò commoraturi estis in illis. Hęc erit felicitas magna.
                                            13
Respondebitur illis  : Revertimini retrò vestri in mundum, & exquirite lumen. Et firmabitur inter eos murus altus, cui erit porta ; in interiori parte cujus erit misericordia : & interior pars illius ante se habebit pœnam. Inclamabunt ad eos (idest impii ad Fideles  :)
                                            14
Nonne fuimus vobiscum ? Respondebunt illi  : Utique : sed vos seduxistis animas vestras ; & cum desiderio expectatis malum nostrum  : & dubii fuistis in fide  : & deceperunt vos concupiscentiæ, donec advenit imperium Dei (idest mors ) & decepit vos circa Deum (idest circa ejus misericordiam, & justitiam ) Deceptor (idest Satanas ).
                                            15
                                            16
                                            15.  An nondùm tempus advenit illis, qui crediderunt, ut humiliter subjiciant corda sua commonitioni Dei, illi, quod descendit de veritate (idest Alcorano ) & ne sint, sicut illi, quibus datus fuit liber anteà (idest Judęi, & Christiani ) prolongatumque fuit super eos tempus : sed obdurata sunt corda eorum : & multi ex eis fuerunt prævaricantes.
                                            17
                                            16.  Scitote, quòd Deus vivificat terram post mortem ejus. Jam distinximus clarè vobis signa, ut vos intelligatis.
                                            18
                                            19
                                            18.  Et, qui crediderint in Deum, & Legatum ejus, hi erunt veraces, & testes apud Dominum suum contra infideles  : ipsis erit merces eorum, & lux eorum. Qui verò increduli fuerint, & inficiati fuerint signa nostra, hi erunt socii Inferni.
                                            20
                                            19.  Scitote, quòd vita mundana est ludus, & jocus : ornamentum verò, & studium gloriæ in vos, & ęmulatio multiplicationis in divitiis, & filiis est, sicut pluvia : delectat agricolam germen ejus (idest ortum propter eam ) deinde arescit, ita, ut videas illud flavescens : deinde erit stipula arida. Et in novissimo Sæculo erit pœna vehemens illis, qui hæc sectati fuerint. 20.
                                            21
                                            21.  Prævenite vos invicem ad indulgentiam à Domino vestro, & paradisum, cujus amplitudo est, sicut amplitudo Cœli, & Terræ : præparatus fuit illis, qui crediderunt in Deum, & Legatos ejus. Hæc erit munificentia Dei : tribuet eam illi, cui voluerit : & Deus est pręditus munificentia magna.
                                            22
                                            22.  Non accidit quidquam infortunii in terra, neque in personis vestris, nisi scriptum fuerit in libro, antequam creemus illud. Porrò hoc apud Deum est facile.
                                            23
                                            27

                                            28.  O qui crediderunt in Jesum  : timete Deum, & credite in Legatum ejus, Mahumetum  : dabit vobis duas portiones de misericordia sua : & ponet vobis lumen, in quo ambuletis, & parcet vobis : nam Deus est indultor, Misericors.

XII.  Lux eorum ante eos, & in dextris eorum. ] Hæc lux ut explicat Jahias, ante eos erit veluti dux viæ in Paradisum : in dextris verò orietur alia lux ex libro illis tradito, de quo suprà dictum est.
XXV.  Demisimus Librum, & stateram.
Demisimus Ferrum. Alii addunt, eum detulisse secum palam ferream majorem, & minorem. Fertur prætereà, dixisse Prophetam Mahumetum : Deus demisit è Cœlo in terram quatuor benedictiones : ferrum, ignem, aquam, & sal. Sed Alhasan exponit : Demisimus ferrum, idest creavimus illud.

XXVII.  Monachismum. ] Arabicè رهبانية  : definitur à Gelale : رفض النساء والتخاذ الصوامع  : Rejectio fęminarum (idest votum castitatis) & habitatio in Monasteriis. Quidam post misericordiam incipiunt novam sententiam : hoc modo : Monachismum verò adinvenerunt ipsi, &c. Multi tamen ex illis permanserunt in religione Jesu, & crediderunt in Prophetam nostrum. Zamchascerius aliquantò modestiùs, لم يحفظوا نذرهم non observaverunt vota sua.

Ampullosę Dei laudes in proprium lucrum tandem dissolvuntur, & evanescunt. Stipem de more à suis emendicat.
II. Thrasonicum in morem Paradisi sui dilatat fimbrias, dùm illius amplitudinem tantam esse, quanta Cœli totius, & terræ est, pronunciat. Atqui certissimum est apud Mahumetanos, Paradisum in septimo Cęlo situm esse, & partem tantùm illius occupare. Quomodò ergo & Cœlum, & terram potest latitudine, & amplitudine æquare, nisi extra Cœlum, & terram in spaciis imaginariis collocetur ?
III.
