Revised Hamidullah, 2000Context

Les hypocrites (Al-Munafiqun)
1

Note [original edition] : ka’anna-hum ḫušbun musannadatun.
Note [original edition] : Afin qu’ils fassent. Autre sens : avant qu’ils fassent.
      8

      The Hypocrites
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
      1
When the hypocrites come to thee they say, ‘We bear witness that thou art indeed the Messenger of God.’ And God knows that thou art indeed His Messenger, and God bears witness that the hypocrites are truly liars.
      2
They have taken their oaths as a covering, then they have barred from the way of God. Surely they -- evil are the things they have been doing.
      3
That is because they have believed, then they have disbelieved; therefore a seal has been set on their hearts, and they do not understand.
      4
When thou seest them, their bodies please thee; but when they speak, thou listenest to their speech, and it is as they were propped-up timbers. They think every cry is against them. They are the enemy; so beware of them. God assail them! How they are perverted!
      5
And when it is said to them, ‘Come now, and God’s Messenger will ask forgiveness for you,’ they twist their heads, and thou seest them turning their faces away, waxing proud.
      6
Equal it is for them, whether thou askest forgiveness for them or thou askest not forgiveness for them; God will never forgive them. God guides not the people of the ungodly.
      7
Those are they that say, ‘Do not expend on them that are with God’s Messenger until they scatter off’ yet unto God belong the treasuries of the heavens and of the earth, but the hypocrites do not understand.
      8
They say, ‘If we return to the City, the mightier ones of it will expel the more abased’ yet glory belongs unto God, and unto His Messenger and the believers, but the hypocrites do not know it.
      9
O believers, let not your possessions neither your children divert you from God’s remembrance; whoso does that, they are the losers.
      10
Expend of what We have provided you before that death comes upon one of you and he says, ‘O my Lord, if only Thou wouldst defer me unto a near term, so that I may make freewill offering, and so I may become one of the righteous.’
      11
But God will never defer any soul when its term comes. And God is aware of the things you do."

      The Hypocrites
      Revealed at Al-Madînah
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.
      1
When the hypocrites come unto thee (O Muḥammad), they say: We bear witness that thou art indeed Allah’s messenger. And Allah knoweth that thou art indeed His messenger, and Allah beareth witness that the hypocrites indeed are speaking falsely.
      2
They make their faith a pretext so that they may turn (men) from the way of Allah. Verily evil is that which they are wont to do,
      3
That is because they believed, then disbelieved, therefore their hearts are sealed so that they understand not.
      4
And when thou seest them their figures please thee; and if they speak thou givest ear unto their speech. (They are) as though they were blocks of wood in striped cloaks. They deem every shout to be against them. They are the enemy, so beware of them. Allah confound them! How they are perverted!
      5
And when it is said unto them: Come! The messenger of Allah will ask forgiveness for you! they avert their faces and thou seest them turning away, disdainful.
      6
Whether thou ask forgiveness for them or ask not forgiveness for them is all one for them; Allah will not forgive them. Lo! Allah guideth not the evil-living folk.
      7
They it is who say: Spend not on behalf of those (who dwell) with Allah’s messenger that they may disperse (and go away from you); when Allah’s are the treasures of the heavens and the earth; but the hypocrites comprehend not.
      8
They say: Surely, if we return to Al-Madinah the mightier will soon drive out the weaker; when might belongeth to Allah and to His messenger and to the believers; but the hypocrites know not.
      9
O ye who believe! Let not your wealth nor your children distract you from remembrance of Allah. Those who do so, they are the losers.
      10
And spend of that wherewith We have provided you before death cometh unto one of you and he saith: My Lord! If only thou wouldst reprieve me for a little while, then I would give alms and be among the righteous.
      11
But Allah reprieveth no soul when its term cometh, and Allah is Informed of what ye do.

      CHAP. LXIII.
Intitled, The Hypocrites; revealed at Medina.
In the name of the most merciful God.
      1
WHEN the hypocrites come unto thee, they say, We bear witness that thou art indeed the apostle of God. And God knoweth that thou art indeed his apostle: but God beareth witness that the hypocrites are certainly liars.
      2
They have taken their oaths for a protection, and they turn others aside from the way of God: it is surely evil which they do.
      3
This is testified of them, because they believed, and afterwards became unbelievers: wherefore a seal is set on their hearts, and they shall not understand.
      4
      When thou

beholdest them, their persons please thee
      a
Note [original edition] : When thou beholdest them, their persons please thee, &c.] The commentators tell us, that Abdallah Ebn Obba, a chief hypocrite, was a tall man of a very graceful presence, and of a ready and eloquent tongue; and used to frequent the prophet’s assembly, attended by several like himself; and that these men were greatly admired by Mohammed, who was taken with their handsome appearance, and listened to their discourse with pleasure1.
      • 1 Al Beidawi.
: and if they speak, thou hearest their discourse with delight. They resemble pieces of timber set up against a wall
      b
Note [original edition] : They resemble pieces of timber set up against a wall;] Being tall and big, but void of knowledge and consideration2.
      • 2 Idem.
. They imagine every shout to be against them
      c
Note [original edition] : They imagine every shout to be against them ;] Living under continual apprehensions; because they are conscious of their hypocrisy towards God, and their insincerity towards the Moslems.
. They are enemies: wherefore beware of them. God curse them: how are they turned aside from the truth!
        5
And when it is said unto them, Come, that the apostle of God may ask pardon for you; they turn away their heads, and thou seest them retire big with disdain.
        6
It shall be equal unto them, whether thou ask pardon for them, or do not ask pardon for them: God will by no means forgive them; for God directeth not the prevaricating people.
        7
These are the men who say to the inhabitants of Medina, Do not bestow any thing on the refugees who are with the apostle of God, that they may be obliged to separate from him. Whereas unto God belong the stores of heaven and earth: but the hypocrites do not understand.
        8
They say, Verily, if we return to Medina, the worthier shall expel thence the meaner
        d
Note [original edition] : They say, Verily, if we return to Medina, the worthier shall expel thence the meaner;] These, as well as the preceding, were the words of Ebn Obba to one of Medina, who in a certain expedition quarrelling with an Arab of the desart about water, received a blow on the head with a stick, and made his complaint thereof to him3.
        • 3 Idem.
. Whereas superior worth belongeth unto God and his apostle, and the true believers: but the hypocrites know it not.
        9
O true believers, let not your riches or your children divert you from the remembrance of God: for whosoever doth this, they will surely be losers.
        10
And give alms out of that which we have bestowed on you; before death come unto one of you, and he say, O Lord, wilt thou not grant me respite for a short term: that I may give alms, and become one of the righteous?
        11
For God will by no means grant further respite to a soul, when its determined time is come: and God is fully apprized of that which ye do.

Vide, quę alibi diximus de his modis loquendi in Alcorano.
III.

            5
            Lors qu’on leur a dit, venez vers le Phophete il demandera pardon à Dieu de vos pechez, ils ont branslé la teste & se sont retirez avec orgueil ;

            1
