L’enveloppé (Al-Muzzamil)
1
O toi, l’enveloppé [dans tes vêtements] !
2
Lève-toi [pour prier], toute la nuit, excepté une petite partie ;
3
Sa moitié, ou un peu moins ;
4
ou un peu plus. Et récite le Coran, lentement et clairement.
5

Sourate LXXIII.
Celui qui s’est enveloppé.
(Al-Muzammil.)
Translator's introductory remarks
Titre tiré du vt. 1.
On a ici trois fragments d’époques différentes.
Au nom d’Allah, le Bienfaiteur Miséricordieux.
1
O [toi] enveloppé d’un manteau !
2
reste en vigile seulement peu de temps,
Note [original edition] : Reste en vigile. Text. : lève-toi la nuit.
    3

          Enwrapped
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
          1
O thou enwrapped in thy robes,
          2
keep vigil the night, except a little
          3
(a half of it, or diminish a little,
          4
          or add a little), and chant the Koran very distinctly;
          5
          Behold, We shall cast upon thee a weighty word;
          6
surely the first part of the night is heavier in tread, more upright in speech,
          7
surely in the day thou hast long business.
          8
And remember the Name of thy Lord, and devote thyself unto Him very devoutly.
          9
Lord of the East and the West; there is no god but He; so take Him for a Guardian.
          10
And bear thou patiently what they say, and forsake them graciously.
          11
Leave Me to those who cry lies, those prosperous ones, and respite them a little,
          12
for with Us there are fetters, and a furnace,
          13
and food that chokes, and a painful chastisement,
          14
upon the day when the earth and the mountains shall quake and the mountains become a slipping heap of sand.
          15
Surely We have sent unto you a Messenger as a witness over you, even as We sent to Pharaoh a Messenger,
          16
but Pharaoh rebelled against the Messenger, so We seized him remorselessly.
          17
If therefore you disbelieve, how will you guard yourselves against a day that shall make the children grey-headed?
          18
Whereby heaven shall be split, and its promise shall be performed.
          19
Surely this is a Reminder; so let him who will take unto his Lord a way.
          20
Thy Lord knows that thou keepest vigil nearly two-thirds of the night, or a half of it, or a third of it, and a party of those with thee; and God determines the night and the day. He knows that you will not number it, and He has turned towards you. Therefore recite of the Koran so much as is feasible. He knows that some of you are sick, and others journeying in the land, seeking the bounty of God, and others fighting in the way of God. So recite of it so much as is feasible. And perform the prayer, and pay the alms, and lend to God a good loan. Whatever good you shall forward to your souls’ account, you shall find it with God as better, and mightier a wage. And ask God’s forgiveness; God is All-forgiving, All-compassionate."

          The Enshrouded One
          Revealed at Mecca
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.
          1
O thou wrapped up in thy raiment!
          2
Keep vigil the night long, save a little -
          3
A half thereof, or abate a little thereof"
          4
Or add (a little) thereto - and chant the Qur’an in measure,
          5
For we shall charge thee with a word of weight.
          6
Lo! the vigil of the night is (a time) when impression is more keen and speech more certain.
          7
Lo! thou hast by day a chain of business.
          8
So remember the name of thy Lord and devote thyself with a complete devotion -
          9
Lord of the East and the West; there is no Allah save Him; so choose thou Him alone for thy defender -
          10
And bear with patience what they utter, and part from them with a fair leave-taking.
          11
Leave Me to deal with the deniers, lords of ease and comfort (in this life); and do thou respite them awhile.
          12
Lo! with Us are heavy fetters and a raging fire,
          13
And food which choketh (the partaker), and a painful doom"
          14
On the day when the earth and the hills rock, and the hills become a heap of running sand.
          15
Lo! We have sent unto you a messenger as witness against you, even as We sent unto Pharaoh a messenger.
          16
But Pharaoh rebelled against the messenger, whereupon We seized him with no gentle grip.
          17
Then how, if ye disbelieve, will ye protect yourselves upon the day which will turn children grey,
          18
The very heaven being then rent asunder. His promise is to be fulfilled.
          19
Lo! This is a Reminder. Let him who will, then, choose a way unto his Lord.
          20
Lo! thy Lord knoweth how thou keepest vigil sometimes nearly two-thirds of the night, or (sometimes) half or a third thereof, as do a party of those with thee. Allah measureth the night and the day. He knoweth that ye count it not, and turneth unto you in mercy. Recite, then, of the Qur’an that which is easy for you. He knoweth that there are sick folk among you, while others travel in the land in search of Allah’s bounty, and others (still) are fighting for the cause of Allah. So recite of it that which is easy (for you), and establish worship and pay the poor-due, and (so) lend unto Allah a goodly loan. Whatsoever good ye send before you for your souls, ye will find it with Allah, better and greater in the recompense. And seek forgiveness of Allah. Lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

          CHAP. LXXIII.
Intitled, The Wrapped up; revealed at Mecca
          a
Note [original edition] : Some will have the last verse, beginning at these words, Verily thy Lord knoweth, &c., to have been revealed at Medina.
            .
In the name of the most merciful God.
            1
            O Thou wrapped up
            b
Note [original edition] : O Thou wrapped up;] When this revelation was brought to Mohammed, he was wrapped up in his garments, being affrighted at the appearance of Gabriel; or, as some say, he lay sleeping unconcernedly, or, according to others, praying, wrapped up in one part of a large mantle or rug, with the other part of which Ayesha had covered herself to sleep1.
This epithet of wrapped up, and another of the same import given to Mohammed in the next chapter, have been imagined, by several learned men2, pretty plainly to intimate his being subject to the falling sickness: a malady generally attributed to him by the Christians 3, but mentioned by no Mohammedan writer. Tho’ such an inference may be made, yet I think it scarce probable, much less necessary4.

Note [original edition] : Except a small part;] For a half is such, with respect to the whole. Or, as the sentence may be rendered, Pray half the night, within a small matter, &c. Some expound these words as an exception to nights in general; according to whom the sense will be, Spend one-half of every night in prayer, except some few nights in the year, &c 5.

            a
Note [original edition] : Or do thou lessen the same, or add thereto;] i.e. Set apart either less than half the night, as one third, for example, or more, as two thirds. Or the meaning may be, either take a small matter from a lesser part of the night than one half, e.g. from one third, and so reduce it to a fourth; or add to such lesser part, and make it a full half1.
            • 1 Idem.
. And repeat the Koran with a distinct and sonorous voice:
            5
for we will lay on thee a weighty word
            b
Note [original edition] : A weighty word;] viz. The precepts contained in the Korân; which are heavy and difficult to those who are obliged to observe them, and especially to the prophet, whose care it was to see that his people observed them also2.
            • 2 Idem, Jallal.

            Verily the rising by night
            c
Note [original edition] : The rising by night;] Or, the person who riseth by night; or, the hours, or particularly the first hours of the night, &c.
is more efficacious for steadfast continuance in devotion, and more conducive to decent pronunciation
              d
Note [original edition] : The rising by night is more efficacious for steadfast continuance and more conducive to decent pronunciation;] For the night-time is most proper for meditation and prayer, and also for reading God’s word distinctly and with attention, by reason of the absence of every noise and object which may distract the mind.
Marracci, having mentioned this natural explication of the Mohammedan commentators, because he finds one word in the verse which may be taken in a sense tending that way, says the whole may with greater exactness be expounded of the fitness of the night season for amorous diversions and discourse; and he paraphrases it in Latin thus: Certe in principio noctis majus robur et vim habet homo, ad foeminas premendas et subagitandas, et ad clarioribus verbis amores suos propalandos 3. A most effectual way, this, to turn a book into ridicule!
              • 3 Marracc. in Alc. p. 759.
              :
              7
for in the day-time thou hast long employment.
              8
And commemorate the name of thy Lord; and separate thyself unto him, renouncing worldly vanities.
              9
He is the Lord of the east, and of the west; there is no God but he. Wherefore take him for thy patron:
              10
and patiently suffer the contumelies which the infidels utter against thee; and depart from them with a decent departure.
              11
And let me alone with those who charge the Koran with falsehood, who enjoy the blessings of this life; and bear with them for a while:
              12
verily with us are heavy fetters, and a burning fire,
              13
and food ready to choake him who swalloweth it
              e
Note [original edition] : Choaking food;] As thorns and thistles, the fruit of the infernal tree al Zakkûm, and the corruption flowing from the bodies of the damned.
                , and painful torment.
                14
On a certain day the earth shall be shaken, and the mountains also, and the mountains shall become a heap of sand poured forth.
                15
                Verily we have sent unto you an apostle, to bear witness against you; as we sent an apostle unto Pharaoh;
                16
but Pharaoh was disobedient unto the apostle; wherefore we chastised him with a heavy chastisement.
                17
How, therefore, will ye escape, if ye believe not, the day which shall make children become gray-headed through terror?

Verily this is an admonition; and whoever is willing to be admonished will take the way unto his Lord.

Thy Lord knoweth that thou continuest in prayer and meditation sometimes near two third parts of the night, and sometimes one half thereof, and at other times one third part thereof; and a part of thy companions, who are with thee, do the same. But God measureth the night and the day; he knoweth that ye cannot exactly compute the same: wherefore he turneth favourably unto you

Note [original edition] : Wherefore he turneth favourably unto you;] By making the matter easy to you, and dispensing with your scrupulous counting of the hours of the night which ye are directed to spend in reading and praying: for some of the Moslems, not knowing how the time passed, used to watch the whole night, standing and walking about till their legs and feet swelled in a sad manner. The commentators add that this precept of dedicating a part of the night to devotion, is abrogated by the institution of the five hours of prayer1.

Read, therefore, so much of the Koran as may be easy unto you. He knoweth that there will be some infirm among you; and others travel through the earth, that they may obtain a competency of the bounty of God; and others fight in the defence of God’s faith. Read, therefore, so much of the same as may be easy. And observe the stated times of prayer, and pay the legal alms; and lend unto God an acceptable loan; for whatever good ye send before your souls, ye shall find the same with God. I.  O involute vestibus. ] Nimirùm, ò Mahumete. Fertur, cùm Mahumetus involutus esset in stragulo Aisæ, orasse.
II.  Aut diminue. ] Autumat Gelal, hanc diminutionem è dimidio importare الى الثلث , usque ad tertiam partem noctis. Additionem verò الى الثلثين , usque ad duas tertias partes noctis.
IV.  Dictum grave. Sententias Alcorani terribiles, seu vehementes, ob res difficiles, & graves, quæ in illis continebantur.
                V.  Certè exordium noctis fortius est. Ita piè exponunt Moslemi Impostoris sui nugas, & ineptias, cùm magis legitima versiculi hujus expositio esset : Certè in principio noctis majus robur, & vim habet homo ad fœminas premendas, & subagitandas, & ad clarioribus verbis amores suos propalandos. Plus scilicet urgebat Mahumetum negocium mulierum, quàm orationis, & priùs libidini satisfaciendum erat, quàm pietati.
XII.  Et cibus afferens gutturi angustiam. Infixæ nimirùm in gutture manent.
XIX.  Deus autem mensurat. ] Tota versiculi hujus vis in eo sita esse videtur, ut Mahumetus, & socii ejus à prolixioribus precibus, & à sollicitudine computandarum horarum noctis eximantur. Proptereà allevantur hìc ab hujusmodi onere. Credat Judæus apella : non ego.

                  Note [original edition] : REFUTATIONES.
II. Sed, dùm se pium, religiosumque ostentare impiissimus impostor satagit, ridiculum nugatorem detegit. Primò enim fingit, præcipi sibi à Deo preces per totam noctem : deindè exiguam illius partem somno condonari. At quænam erit hæc pars exigua ? dimidium noctis, vel duæ tertiæ partes illius. Ridiculum caput.
III.

e i Cieli rovineranno? Questo veramente averra,
                      20
