Le revêtu d’un manteau (Al-Muddattir)
1
O, toi (Muhammad) ! Le revêtu d’un manteau !
2
Lève-toi et avertis.
3
Et de ton Seigneur, célèbre la grandeur.
4
Et tes vêtements, purifie-les.
5
Et de tout péché, écarte-toi.
6
27
Et qui te dira ce qu’est Saqar ?
28
Il ne laisse rien et n’épargne rien ;
29
Il brûle la peau et la noircit.
30
Ils sont dix neuf à y veiller.
31

    2
    lève-toi et avertis !
    3
    Ton Seigneur, magnifie-[le] !
    4
    Tes vêtements, purifie-[les] !
    5
    La souillure, fuis-[la] !
Note [original edition] : Souillure désignerait les Idoles, selon les commt.
      6
Ne donne point croyant trop donner !
Note [original edition] : Autre sens : Ne donne point cherchant qu’on te rende davantage.
        7
Envers ton Seigneur sois constant !
        8
Quand il sera soufflé dans la Trompe,
        9
ce sera ce jour-là un jour horrible,
        10
        intolérable aux Infidèles.
        11

        39
[41] sauf les gens de la Droite.
        40
        [42] Dans les Jardins, ceux-ci s’interrogeront
        41
        [42] sur les Pécheurs
        42

        Facsimile Image Placeholder
        [43] et leur demanderont : « Qu’est-ce qui vous a conduits dans la Saqar ? »
        43
        [44] Ils répondront : « Nous n’étions pas de ceux qui font la Prière ;
        44
        [45] nous ne nourrissions pas le Pauvre ;
        45

        Shrouded
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
        1
O thou shrouded in thy mantle,
        2
        arise, and warn!
        3
        Thy Lord magnify
        4
        thy robes purify
        5
        and defilement flee!
        6
Give not, thinking to gain greater
        7
and be patient unto thy Lord.
        8
For when the Trump is sounded
        9
that day will be a harsh day,
        10
        for the unbelievers not easy.
        11
Leave Me with him whom I created alone,
        12
and appointed for him ample wealth
        13
        and sons standing before him,
        14
        and made all things smooth for him;
        15
then he is eager that I should do more.
        16
        Nay! He is forward unto Our signs;
        17
and I shall constrain him to a hard ascent.
        18
Lo! He reflected, and determined --
        19
death seize him, how he determined!
        20
Again, death seize him, how he determined!
        21
        Then he beheld,
        22
        then he frowned, and scowled,
        23
then he retreated, and waxed proud.
        24
        He said, ‘This is naught but a trumped-up sorcery;
        25
‘this is nothing but mortal speech.’
        26
        I shall surely roast him in Sakar;
        27
and what will teach thee what is Sakar?
        28
It spares not, neither leaves alone
        29
        scorching the flesh;
        30
        over it are nineteen.
        31
We have appointed only angels to be masters of the Fire, and their number We have appointed only as a trial for the unbelievers, that those who were given the Book may have certainty, and that those who believe may increase in belief, and that those who were given the Book and those who believe may not be in-doubt, and that those in whose hearts there is sickness, and the unbelievers, may say, ‘What did God intend by this as a similitude?’ So God leads astray whomsoever He will, and He guides whomsoever He will; and none knows the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but a Reminder to mortals.
        32
        Nay! By the moon
        33
and the night when it retreats
        34
and the dawn when it is white,
        35
surely it is one of the greatest things
        36
        as a warner to mortals.
        37
to whoever of you desires to go forward or lag behind.
        38
Every soul shall be pledged for what it has earned,
        39
        save the Companions of the Right;
        40
        in Gardens they will question
        41
        concerning the sinners,
        42
        ‘What thrusted you into Sakar?’
        43
They shall say, ‘We were not of those who prayed, and
        44
        we fed not the needy,
        45
and we plunged along with the plungers,
        46
and we cried lies to the Day of Doom,
        47
till the Certain came to us.’--
        48
Then the intercession of the intercessors shall not profit them.
        49
What ails them, that they turn away from the Reminder,
        50
as if they were startled asses
        51
        fleeing -- before a lion?
        52
Nay, every man of them desires to be -- given -- scrolls unrolled.
        53
No indeed; but they do not fear the Hereafter.
        54
        No indeed; surely it is a Reminder;
        55
so whoever wills shall remember it.
        56
And they will not remember, except that God wills; He is worthy to be feared, -- worthy to forgive."

Nay! For lo! he hath been stubborn to Our revelations.
        17

Again (self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! -

        27
        - Ah, what will convey unto thee what that burning is! -
        28
It leaveth naught; it spareth naught"
        29
        It shrivelleth the man.
        30
        Above it are nineteen.
        31
We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals.

        Nay, by the Moon"
        33
And the night when it withdraweth"
        34
And the dawn when it shineth forth,
        35
Lo! this is one of the greatest (portents)
        36
        As a warning unto men,
        37
Unto him of you who will advance or hang back.
        38
        Every soul is a pledge for its own deeds;
        39
Save those who will stand on the right hand.
        40
In gardens they will ask one another"
        41
        Concerning the guilty:
        42
What hath brought you to this burning?
        43
They will answer: We were not of those who prayed"
        44
Nor did we feed the wretched.
        45
We used to wade (in vain dispute) with (all) waders,
        46
And we used to deny the Day of Judgment,
        47
Till the Inevitable came unto us.
        48
The mediation of no mediators will avail them then.
        49
Why now turn they away from the Admonishment,
        50
        As they were frightened asses"
        51
        Fleeing from a lion?
        52
Nay, but everyone of them desireth that he should be given open pages (from Allah).
        53
Nay, verily. They fear not the Hereafter.
        54
Nay, verily. Lo! this is an Admonishment.
        55
        So whosoever will may heed.
        56
And they will not heed unless Allah willeth (it). He is the fount of fear. He is the fount of Mercy.

        CHAP. LXXIV
Intitled, The Covered; revealed at Mecca.
In the name of the most merciful God.
        1
        O Thou covered
        a
Note [original edition] : O thou covered, &c.] It is related, from Mohammed’s own mouth, that being on mount Harâ, and hearing himself called, he looked on each hand, and saw nobody; but looking upwards, he saw the angel Gabriel on a throne, between heaven and earth; at which sight being much terrified, he returned to his wife Khadîjah, and bade her cover him up; and that then the angel descended, and addressed him in the words of the text. From hence some think this chapter to have been the first which was revealed: but the more received opinion is, that it was the 96th. Others say that the prophet, having been reviled by certain of the Koreish, was sitting in a melancholy and pensive posture, wrapped up in his mantle, when Gabriel accosted him: and some say he was sleeping. See the second note to the preceding chapter.
          ,
          2
          arise and preach
          b
Note [original edition] : Arise and preach;] It is generally supposed that Mohammed is here commanded more especially to warn his near relations, the Koreish; as he is expressly ordered to do in a subsequent revelation1.
          • 1 See chap. 26, p. 308, and the Prelim. Disc. §. II. p. 43.

          and magnify thy Lord.
          4
          And cleanse thy garments:
          5
          and fly every abomination
          c
Note [original edition] : Fly every abomination;] By the word abomination the commentators generally agree idolatry to be principally intended.
            :
            6

            7
and patiently wait for thy Lord.

Let me alone with him whom I have created
            a
Note [original edition] : Let me alone with him whom I have created, &c.] The person here meant is generally supposed to have been al Walid Ebn al Mogheira 1, a principal man among the Koreish.
            • 1 Al Zamakh. Al Beidawi.
            ,

on whom I have bestowed abundant riches,
            13
and children dwelling in his presence
            b
Note [original edition] : And children dwelling in his presence;] Being well provided for, and not obliged to go abroad to seek their livings, as most others of the Meccans were2.

and for whom I have disposed affairs in a smooth and easy manner
            c
Note [original edition] : And for whom I have disposed affairs in a smooth and easy manner;] By facilitating his advancement to power and dignity; which were so considerable that he was surnamed Rihâna Koreish, or The sweet odour of the Koreish, and al Wahîd, i.e. The only one, or The incomparable 3.
            • 3 Idem.
            ,
            15
and who desireth that I will yet add other blessings unto him.
            16
By no means: because he is an adversary to our signs
            d
Note [original edition] : By no means, &c.] On the revelation of this passage it is said that Walid’s prosperity began to decay, and continued daily so to do to the time of his death4.
            • 4 Idem.
            .
            17
I will afflict him with grievous calamities
            e
Note [original edition] : I will afflict him with grievous calamities;] Or, as the words may be strictly rendered, I will drive him up the crag of a mountain; which some understand of a mountain of fire, agreeably to a tradition of their prophet, importing that al Walid will be condemned to ascend this mountain, and then to be cast down from thence, alternately for ever; and that he will be seventy years in climbing up, and as many in falling down5.
            • 5 Idem.
            :
            18
for he hath devised and prepared contumelious expressions to ridicule the Koran.
            19
May he be cursed: how maliciously hath he prepared the same!
            20
And again, may he be cursed: how maliciously hath he prepared the same!
            21
            Then he looked,
            22
and frowned, and put on an austere countenance:
            23
            then he turned back, and was elated with pride;
            24
and he said, This is no other than a piece of magic, borrowed from others:
            25
these are only the words of a man.
            26
I will cast him to be burned in hell.
            27
And what shall make thee to understand what hell is?
            28
It leaveth not any thing unconsumed, neither doth it suffer any thing to escape:
            29
            it scorcheth men’s flesh:
            30
over the same are nineteen angels appointed.
            31
We have appointed none but angels to preside over hell fire
            f
Note [original edition] : We have appointed none but angels to preside over hell fire;] The reason of which is said to be, that they might be of a different nature and species from those who are to be tormented, lest they should have a fellow-feeling of, and compassionate their sufferings; or else, because of their great strength and severity of temper6.
            • 6 Idem.
: and we have expressed the number of them only for an occasion of discord to the unbelievers
            g
Note [original edition] : For an occasion of discord to the unbelievers;] Or, for a trial of them: because they might say this was a particular borrowed by Mohammed of the Jews.
; that they to whom the scriptures have been given may be certain of the veracity of this book
              h
Note [original edition] : They to whom the scriptures have been given;] And especially the Jews; this being conformable to what is contained in their books7.
              • 7 Jallal.
              , and the true believers may increase in faith;
              32
              and that those to whom the scriptures have been given, and the true believers, may not doubt hereafter;
              33
and that those in whose hearts there is an infirmity, and the unbelievers, may say, What mystery doth God intend by this number?
              34
Thus doth God cause to err whom he pleaseth; and he directeth whom he pleaseth. None knoweth the armies of thy Lord
              i
Note [original edition] : The armies of thy Lord;] i.e. All his creatures; or particularly the number and strength of the guards of hell.
                , besides him; and this
                k
Note [original edition] : This;] The antecedent seems to be hell
is no other than a memento unto mankind.

                    44
They shall answer, We were not of those who were constant at prayer,

                    c
Note [original edition] : Death;] Literally, That which is certain.
                      overtook us:
                      49
and the intercession of the interceders shall not avail them.
                      50
What aileth them, therefore, that they turn aside from the admonition of the Koran,
                      51
as though they were timorous asses flying from a lion?

But every man among them desireth that he may have expanded scrolls delivered to him from God
                      d
Note [original edition] : That he may have expanded scrolls delivered to him from God;] For the infidels told Mohammed that they would never obey him as a prophet till he brought each man a writing from heaven, to this effect, viz. From God to such a one: Follow Mohammed3.

                      35
                      40
                      поидут в раи, и вопросят
                      41
                      осужденных в муку,
                      42
                      глаголюще им : кто вас вверже во ад ;
                      43
                      49
                      чесо ради неверные отдалилися от закона божия ;
                      50
                      они суть подобни ослу дикому,
                      51

                      SURA LXXIV.
                      COOPERTUS.
                      MECCANA :
                      COMMATUM QUINQUAGINTA QUINQUE.
                      1
                      1.  O Cooperte :
                      2
                      2.  Surge, & prædica.
                      3

                      4
                      4.  Et vestimenta tua purifica.
                      5
                      5.  Et abominationem fuge.
                      6
                      7
                      7.  Et Dominum tuum patienter expecta.
                      8
                      8.  Cùm porrò insonitum fuerit Tuba.
                      9
                      9.  Ille tunc temporis erit dies difficilis.
                      10
                      10.  Super infideles nequaquam facilis.
                      11
                      11.  Sine me, & illum, quem creavi, solum.
                      12
                      12.  Et tribui illi opes amplas.
                      13
                      14
                      14.  Et planitiem substravi illi complanando (idest in cunctis felicem feci illum ).
                      15
                      15.  Insuper sperat, quòd aucturus sim illi felicitatem.
                      16
                      17
                      17.  Mox adigam illum ad ascendendum montem ignis.
                      18
                      18.  Quippè ipse excogitavit, & disposuit, quæ diceret contra Alcoranum.
                      19
                      19.  Sed occisus fuit (idest maledictus fuit ) quemadmodùm disposuit.
                      20
                      20.  Tùm occisus fuit, quemadmodùm disposuit.
                      21
                      21.  Deinde respexit præcipuos gentis suæ.
                      22
                      22.  Tùm vultum corrugavit, & tristitiam præsetulit.
                      23
                      23.  Deindè terga vertit, & in superbiam elatus est.
                      24
                      25
                      25.  Non est hic, nisi dictum hominis.
                      26
                      26.  Detrudam eum comburendum in Tartarum.
                      27
                      28
                      28.  Nihil relinquit, & nihil dimittit, quin absumat illud.
                      29
                      29.  Comburens carnes hominum.
                      30
                      30.  Super eum constituti sunt Angeli novemdecim.
                      31
                      32
                      32.  Ita est. Per Lunam.
                      33
                      33.  Et noctem, quandò retrocedit.
                      34
                      34.  Et Auroram, quandò rutilat.
                      35
                      35.   Juro , quòd hic Tartarus est sanè una rerum gravissimarum.
                      36
                      36.  Commonefaciens homines.
                      37
                      39
                      39.  Sed socii dexteræ (idest boni ).
                      40
                      40.  In hortis interrogando exquirent
                      41
                      à peccatoribus.
                      42
                      41.  Quid induxit vos in Tartarum ?
                      43
                      42.  Respondebunt : Non fuimus ex orantibus.
                      44
                      43.  Et non cibavimus pauperem.
                      45
                      44.  Et inaniter disceptavimus cum futilia pertractantibus.
                      46
                      45.  Et negavimus, ut falsum diem Judicii.
                      47
                      46.  Donec supervenit nobis certitudo (idest mors ).
                      48
                      47.  Neque verò proderit illis intercessio intercedentium.
                      49
                      55
                      54.  Qui ergo voluerit commoneri, commonefaciet eum.
                      56
                      55.  Sed non commonefient, nisi voluerit Deus. Ipse dignus est timore : & dignus est indulgentia (idest ipsi convenit hominibus indulgere ).
                      Note [original edition] : NOTÆ.
Sura Meccana censetur : & versus quinque suprà quinquaginta illi à plerisque tribuuntur. Zamchascerius, aliique non inferioris notæ Authores, asserunt, hanc fuisse primam Suram, quæ revelata fuerit Mahumeto : communis tamen sententia adversatur, ut constat ex his Jahiæ verbis : Dixit Jahias : communis sententia est, prima verba revelata Mahumeto fuisse illa : Lege in nomine Domini tui, qui creavit. Quæ verba infrà occurrent.
                      I.  O Cooperte. Et aspexi supra me, & vidi nescio quid (Vel, ut habetur ex relatione Aisæ ) & vidi sedentem super Thronum inter Cęlum, & terram (hic erat Angelus, qui vocaverat eum ) & tremefactus reversus sum ad Chadigen, & dixi : Cooperite me ; cooperite me (Aliqui addunt : وصبوا على ماءًا باردًا & effundite super me aquam frigidam ). Ex aliorum verò relatione hæc habet idem Author : وقيل سمع من قريش ما كرهه فاغتم فتغطى بثوبه مفكرًا كما يفعل المغموم فامر ان لا تدع انذارهم Dicunt alii, illum audivisse à Coraisitis contra se verba, quæ ipsi valdè displicuerunt, quamobrem tristitia oppressus cooperuit se pallio suo, eoque involutus sedebat cogitabundus, in morem hominis solicitudine, ac męrore pleni.
Eodem modo Zamchascerius, & cæteri, quos videre licuit.
XI.  Sine me, & illum, quem creavi solum. ] Idest, sine, ut veniat ad me in judicium solus, & omnibus opibus, filiisque suis spoliatus. Putant Zamchascerius, & alii, hìc Mahumetum mordere الوليد ابن المغيرة , Validum filium Mogheiræ hostem suum infensissimum, cum quo perpetuas habuit simultates, & qui ob magnam felicitatem vocabatur à suis الوحيد Unicus, seu Solus.
XIX.  Sed occisus est, quemadmodùm disposuit. ] Verbum Arabicum قتل occisus est, exponitur à Gelale : لعن وعذّب maledictus, & punitus fuit.
                        R
                        Note [original edition] : REFUTATIONES.
III. Dedecet omninò Legislatorem, qualem se facit Mahumetus, Satyrici personam induere, & scommatibus inimicos suos privatos, suppresso nomine, appetere. Id tamen facit Mahumetus hìc, & alibi contra Validum filium Mogheiræ, & alios ex Meccanis sibi infensos.
IV.
VI. Justè exigebant Judæi, vel Meccani Divinum aliquem librum, ob cujus authoritatem sequi deberent Mahumetum, & credere in Alcoranum. Atqui is nullus erat : quamobrem meritò utrumque reiciebant.
VII. Cùm instaret Mahumetus, credendum esse Alcorano suo, eo, quòd sine ullius Divini libri testimonio, satis ex seipso fidem mereretur, & sufficiens esset ad homines commonendos, & in religione recta instruendos : ex alia verò parte obstinatam Arabum contradictionem videret : concludit, neminem posse ab Alcorano commonefieri, nisi voluerit Deus. Circa quem loquendi modum vide, quæ alibi fusè disseruimus.
