Le jour montant (Ad-Duha)
1
Par le Jour Montant !
2
5
Ton Seigneur t’accordera certes [Ses faveurs], et alors tu seras satisfait.
6
Ne t’a-t-Il pas trouvé orphelin ? Alors Il t’a accueilli !
7
Ne t’a-t-Il pas trouvé égaré ? Alors Il t’a guidé.
8
Ne t’a-t-Il pas trouvé pauvre ? Alors Il t’a enrichi.
9

      3
Thy Lord has neither forsaken thee nor hates thee

Did He not find thee an orphan, and shelter thee?
      7
Did He not find thee erring, and guide thee?
      8
Did He not find thee needy, and suffice thee?

Note [original edition] : Thy Lord hath not forsaken thee, &c.] It is related that no revelation having been vouchsafed to Mohammed for several days, in answer to some questions put to him by the Koreish, because he had confidently promised to resolve them the next day, without adding the exception, if it please God 1, or because he had repulsed an importunate beggar, or else because a dead puppy lay under his seat, or for some other reason; his enemies said that God had left him: whereupon this chapter was sent down for his consolation 2.

Did he not find thee an orphan, and hath he not taken care of thee?

        I.  Per elevationem Solis. Principium diei, aut totus dies. R
          Note [original edition] : REFUTATIONES.
          I. En iterùm ineptiæ juramentorum.
II. Fatetur Mahumetus, se errantem, à Deo directum fuisse. Hunc errorem non circa aliquod iter ipsius, cùm esset puer : sed circa Religionem, & agnitionem Dei per spatium quadraginta annorum, quibus Idola coluit, versatum fuisse ex testimonio ipsorum Mahumetanorum apertè colligitur. Vide, quæ pro hac veritate in vita Mahumeti, in digressione § octavi, fusè disseruimus.
III.
