1
A. L. M.
Note [édition originale] : Sur ces sigles, v. Introd., 144.
    2
[1] Voici les aya de l’Écriture sage,
Note [édition originale] : Voici les aya. Text.
Note [édition originale] : lahwa l-ḥadîṯi « de plaisants discours ».
Note [édition originale] : Qui est ingrat…
Note [édition originale] : Même trait sourate XXIX, 7, introduit par la phrase : Nous avons commandé ; cf. ci-dessus, vt. 13.
[Conclusion. Adresse aux infidèles et a Mahomet. Bienfaisance et omnipotence divines.]
                    20
Note [édition originale] : La coutume etc. Text.
Note [édition originale] : Se soumet à Allah. Text. : livre sa face à Allah.
                        23

Note [édition originale] : Et Il a soumis.
                                33
[32] O Hommes !, soyez pieux envers votre Seigneur !

                                3
for a guidance and a mercy to the good-doers
                                4
who perform the prayer, and pay the alms, and have sure faith in the Hereafter.
                                5

                                6
Some men there are who buy diverting talk to lead astray from the way of God without knowledge, and to take it in mockery; those -- there awaits them a humbling chastisement.
                                7
And when Our signs are recited to such a man he turns away, waxing proud, as though he heard them not, and in his ears were heaviness; so give him good tidings of a painful chastisement.
                                8
Surely those who believe, and do deeds of righteousness, there awaits them Gardens of Bliss
                                9
therein to dwell forever -- God’s promise in truth; and He is the All-mighty, the All-wise.
                                10
He created the heavens without pillars you can see, and He cast on the earth firm mountains, lest it shake with you, and He scattered abroad in it all manner of crawling thing. And We sent down out of heaven water, and caused to grow in it of every generous kind.
                                11
This is God’s creation; now show me what those have created that are apart from Him! Nay, but the evildoers are in manifest error.
                                12
Indeed, We gave Lokman wisdom: ‘Give thanks to God. Whosoever gives thanks gives thanks only for his own soul’s good, and whosoever is ungrateful -- surely God is All-sufficient, All-laudable.’
                                13
And when Lokman said to his son, admonishing him, ‘O my son, do not associate others with God; to associate others with God is a mighty wrong.
                                14
(And We have charged man concerning his parents -- his mother bore him in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning was in two years -- ‘Be thankful to Me, and to thy parents; to Me is the homecoming.
                                15
But if they strive with thee to make thee associate with Me that whereof thou hast no knowledge, then do not obey them. Keep them company honourable in this world; but follow the way of him who turns to Me. Then unto Me you shall return, and I shall tell you what you were doing.’)
                                16
‘O my son, if it should be but the weight of one grain of mustard-seed, and though it be in a rock, or in the heavens, or in the earth, God shall bring it forth; surely God is All-subtle, All-aware.
                                17
O my son, perform the prayer, and bid unto honour, and forbid dishonour. And bear patiently whatever may befall thee; surely that is true constancy.
                                18
Turn not thy cheek away from men in scorn, and walk not in the earth exultantly; God loves not any man proud and boastful.
                                19
Be modest in thy walk, and lower thy voice; the most hideous of voices is the ass’s.’
                                20
                                Have you not seen how that God has subjected to you whatsoever is in the heavens and earth, and He has lavished on you His blessings, outward and inward? And among men there is such a one that disputes concerning God without knowledge or guidance, or an illuminating Book;
                                21
and when it is said to them, ‘Follow what God has sent down,’ they say, ‘No; but we will follow such things as we found our fathers doing.’ What? Even though Satan were calling them to the chastisement of the burning?
                                22
And whosoever submits his will to God, being a good-doer, has laid hold of the most firm handle; and unto God is the issue of all affairs.
                                23
And whoso disbelieves, let not his disbelief grieve thee; unto Us they shall return, and We shall tell them what they did. Surely God knows all the thoughts within the breasts.
                                24
To them We give enjoyment a little, then We compel them to a harsh chastisement.
                                25
If thou askest them, ‘Who created the heavens and the earth?’ they will say, ‘God.’ Say: ‘Praise belongs to God.’ Nay, but most of them have no knowledge.
                                26
To God belongs all that is in the heavens and the earth; surely God -- He is the All-sufficient, the All-laudable.
                                27
Though all the trees in the earth were pens, and the sea-seven seas after it to replenish it, yet would the Words of God not be spent. God is All-mighty, All-wise.
                                28
Your creation and your upraising are as but as a single soul. God is All-hearing, All-seeing.
                                29
Hast thou not seen how that God makes the night to enter into the day and makes the day to enter into the night. and He has subjected the sun and the moon, each of them running to a stated term, and that God is aware of what you do?
                                30
That is because God -- He is the Truth, and that they call upon apart from Him -- that is the false; and for that God is the All-high, the All-great.
                                31
Hast thou not seen how that the ships run upon the sea by the blessing of God, that He may show you some of His signs? Surely in that are signs for every man enduring, thankful.
                                32
And when the waves cover them like shadows they call upon God, making their religion sincerely His; but when He has delivered them to the land, some of them are lukewarm. And none denies Our signs, except every ungrateful traitor.
                                33
O men, fear your Lord, and dread a day when no father shall give satisfaction for his child, and no child shall give satisfaction for his father whatever. Surely God’s promise is true; so let not the present life delude you, and let not the Deluder delude you concerning God.
                                34
Surely God -- He has knowledge of the Hour; He sends down the rain; He knows what is in the wombs. No soul knows what it shall earn tomorrow, and no soul knows in what land it shall die. Surely God is All-knowing, All-aware."

                                7
And when Our revelations are recited unto him he turneth away in pride as if he heard them not, as if there were a deafness in his ears. So give him tidings of a painful doom.
                                8
Lo! those who believe and do good works, for them are the gardens of delight,
                                9
Wherein they will abide. It is a promise of Allah in truth. He is the Mighty, the Wise.
                                10
He hath created the heavens without supports that ye can see, and hath cast into the earth firm hills, so that it quake not with you; and He hath dispersed therein all kinds of beasts. And We send down water from the sky and We cause (plants) of every goodly kind to grow therein.
                                11
This is the Creation of Allah. Now show me that which those (ye worship) beside Him have created. Nay, but the wrong-doers are in error manifest!
                                12
And verily We gave Luqman wisdom, saying: Give thanks unto Allah; and whosoever giveth thanks, he giveth thanks for (the good of) his soul. And whosoever refuseth - Lo! Allah is Absolute, Owner of Praise.
                                13
And (remember) when Luqman said unto his son, when he was exhorting him: O my dear son! Ascribe no partners unto Allah. Lo! to ascribe partners (unto Him) is a tremendous wrong -
                                14
And We have enjoined upon man concerning his partners - His mother beareth him in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years - Give thanks unto Me and unto thy parents. Unto Me is the journeying.
                                15
But if they strive with thee to make thee ascribe unto Me as partner that of which thou hast no knowledge, then obey them not. Consort with them in the world kindly, and follow the path of him who repenteth unto Me. Then unto Me will be your return, and I shall tell you what ye used to do -
                                16
O my dear son! Lo! though it be but the weight of a grain of mustard-seed, and though it be in a rock, or in the heavens, or in the earth, Allah will bring it forth. Lo! Allah is Subtile, Aware.
                                17
O my dear son! Establish worship and enjoin kindness and forbid iniquity, and persevere whatever may befall thee. Lo! that is of the steadfast heart of things.
                                18
Turn not thy cheek in scorn toward folk, nor walk with pertness in the land. Lo! Allah loveth not each braggart boaster.
                                19
Be modest in thy bearing and subdue thy voice. Lo! the harshest of all voices is the voice of the ass.
                                20
See ye not how Allah hath made serviceable unto you whatsoever is in the skies and whatsoever is in the earth and hath loaded you with His favours both without and within? Yet of mankind is he who disputeth concerning Allah, without knowledge or guidance or a scripture giving light.
                                21
And if it be said unto them: Follow that which Allah hath revealed, they say: Nay, but we follow that wherein we found our fathers. What! Even though the devil were inviting them unto the doom of flame?
                                22
Whosoever surrendereth his purpose to Allah while doing good, he verily hath grasped the firm hand-hold. Unto Allah belongeth the sequel of all things.
                                23
And whosoever disbelieveth, let not his disbelief afflict thee (O Muḥammad). Unto Us is their return, and We shall tell them what they did. Lo! Allah is Aware of what is in the breasts (of men).
                                24
We give them comfort for a little, and then We drive them to a heavy doom.
                                25
If thou shouldst ask them: Who created the heavens and the earth? they would answer: Allah. Say: Praise be to Allah! But most of them know not.
                                26
Unto Allah belongeth whatsoever is in the heavens and the earth. Lo! Allah, He is the Absolute, the Owner of Praise.
                                27
And if all the trees in the earth were pens, and the sea, with seven more seas to help it, (were ink), the words of Allah could not be exhausted. Lo! Allah is Mighty, Wise.
                                28
Your creation and your raising (from the dead) are only as (the creation and the raising of) a single soul. Lo! Allah is Hearer, Knower.
                                29
Hast thou not seen how Allah causeth the night to pass into the day and causeth the day to pass into the night, and hath subdued the sun and the moon (to do their work), each running unto an appointed term; and that Allah is Informed of what ye do?
                                30
That (is so) because Allah, He is the True, and that which they invoke beside Him is the False, and because Allah, He is the Sublime, the Great.
                                31
Hast thou not seen how the ships glide on the sea by Allah’s grace, that He may show you of His wonders? Lo! therein indeed are portents for every steadfast, grateful (heart).
                                32
And if a wave enshroudeth them like awnings, they cry unto Allah, making their faith pure for Him only. But when He bringeth them safe to land, some of them compromise. None denieth Our signs save every traitor ingrate.
                                33
O mankind! Keep your duty to your Lord and fear a Day when the parent will not be able to avail the child in aught, nor the child to avail the parent. Lo! Allah’s promise is the very truth. Let not the life of the world beguile you, nor let the deceiver beguile you, in regard to Allah.
                                34
Lo! Allah! With Him is knowledge of the Hour. He sendeth down the rain, and knoweth that which is in the wombs. No soul knoweth what it will earn to-morrow, and no soul knoweth in what land it will die. Lo! Allah is Knower, Aware.

Note [édition originale] : A ludicrous story;] i.e. Vain and silly fables. The passage was revealed, it is said, on occasion of al Nodar Ebn al Hareth, who, having brought from Persia the romance of Rostam and Isfandiyar, the two heroes of that country, recited it in the assemblies of the Koreish, highly extolling the power and splendour of the ancient Persian kings, and preferring their stories to those of Ad and Thamud, David and Solomon, and the rest which are told in the Korân. Some say that al Nodar bought singing girls, and carried them to those who were inclined to become Moslems to divert them from their purpose by songs and tales1.

Note [édition originale] : He hath thrown on the earth mountains firmly rooted, &c.] See chap. 16. p. 215. A learned writer2, in his notes on this passage, says the original word rawâsiya, which the commentators in general will have to signify stable mountains, seems properly to express the Hebrew word mechonim, i.e. bases, or foundations; and therefore he thinks the Korân has here translated that passage of the Psalms, He laid the foundations of the earth, that it should not be moved for ever 3. This is not the only instance which might be given that the Mohammedan doctors are not always the best interpreters of their own scriptures.

Note [édition originale] : Lokmân;] The Arab writers say, that Lokmân was the son of Baûra who was the son or grandson of a sister or aunt of Job; and that he lived several centuries, and to the time of David, with whom he was conversant in Palestine. According to the description they give of his person, he must have been deformed enough; for they say he was of a black complexion (whence some call him an Ethiopian), with thick lips and splay feet: but in return he received from God wisdom and eloquence in a great degree, which some pretend were given him in a vision, on his making choice of wisdom preferably to the gift of prophecy, either of which were offered him. The generality of the Mohammedans, therefore, hold him to have been no prophet, but only a wise man. As to his condition, they say he was a slave, but obtained his liberty on the following occasion: His master having one day given him a bitter melon to eat, he paid him such exact obedience as to eat it all; at which his master being surprised, asked him how he could eat so nauseous a fruit? To which he replied, it was no wonder that he should for once accept a bitter fruit from the same hand from which he had received so many favours1. The commentators mention several quick repartees of Lokmân, which, together with the circumstances above mentioned, agree so well with what Maximus Planudes has written of Esop, that from thence, and from the fables attributed to Lokmân by the orientals, the latter has been generally thought to have been no other than the Esop of the Greeks. However, that be (for I think the matter will bear a dispute), I am of opinion that Planudes borrowed great part of his life of Esop from the traditions he met with in the east concerning Lokmân, concluding them to have been the same person, because they were both slaves, and supposed to be the writers of those fables which go under their respective names, and bear a great resemblance to one another; for it has long since been observed by learned men that the greater part of that monk’s performance is an absurd romance, and supported by no evidence of the ancient writers2.

And then will I declare unto you that which ye have done, are no part of Lokmân’s advice to his son, but are inserted by way of parenthesis, as very pertinent and proper to be repeated here, to shew the heinousness of idolatry; they are to be read (excepting some additions) in the twenty-ninth chapter, and were originally revealed on account of Saad Ebn Abi Wakkâs, as has been already observed3.

We will suffer them to enjoy this world for a little while: afterwards we will drive them to a severe punishment.

If thou ask them who hath created the heavens and the earth, they will surely answer, God. Say, God be praised! but the greater part of them do not understand.

Note [édition originale] : In this passage five things are enumerated which are known to God alone, viz. The time of the day of judgment; the time of rain; what is forming in the womb, as whether it be male or female, &c.; what shall happen on the morrow; and where any person shall die. These the Arabs, according to a tradition of their prophet, call the five keys of secret knowledge. The passage, it is said, was occasioned by al Hareth Ebn Amru, who propounded questions of this nature to Mohammed. As to the last particular, al Beidâwi relates the following story: The angel of death passing once by Solomon in a visible shape, and looking at one who was sitting with him, the man asked who he was, and upon Solomon’s acquainting him that it was the angel of death, said, He seems to want me; wherefore order the wind to carry me from hence into India; which being accordingly done, the angel said to Solomon, I looked so earnestly at the man out of wonder; because I was commanded to take his soul in India, and found him with thee in Palestine.
; but God is knowing and fully acquainted with all things.

                                                      2
                                                      2.  Hæc sunt signa Libri sapientis.
                                                      3
                                                      3.   Ad directionem, & misericordiam benefacientibus.
                                                      4
                                                      4.  Qui persolvunt orationem, & dant eleemosynam, & ipsi in novissimum sæculum ipsi firmiter credunt.
                                                      5
                                                      5.  Hi erunt super directionem (idest dirigentur ) à Domino suo, & hi erunt felices.
                                                      6
His erit pœna ignominiosa.
                                                      7
                                                      8
                                                      8.  Porrò, qui crediderint, & operati fuerint recta, erunt ipsis horti voluptatis.
                                                      9
                                                      9.  Perpetuò moraturis in eis. Hæc est promissio Dei vera, & ipse est Præpotens, Sapiens.
                                                      10
                                                      10.  Creavit Cœlos sine columnis illud sustinentibus, quas videatis, & conjecit in terra montes stabiles, ne commoveretur vobiscum, & sparsit in ea de omni bestia, & demittimus è Cœlo aquam, & germinare facimus in ea ex omni specie pulchra.
                                                      11
                                                      12
                                                      13
                                                      13.  Et memento, cùm dixit Locman filio suo, dùm ipse hortaretur eum : O filiole mi, ne ponas socium cum Deo : nam hujusmodi associatio est sanè iniquitas magna.
                                                      14
                                                      14.  Et præcepimus homini erga parentes suos honorificentiam. Portavit eum Mater ejus in utero cum labore supra laborem, & ablactatio ejus fuit intra duos annos. Itaque gratus esto mihi, & parentibus tuis. Ad me erit reditus omnium in die judicii.
                                                      15
                                                      16
                                                      16.  O filiole mi, certè, si fuerit pondus grani synapis, & fuerit absconditum in petra, aut in Cœlis, aut in terra : proferet illud Deus : quippe Deus est perspicax, peritus
                                                      17
                                                      17.  O filiole mi persolve orationem, & præcipe justum, & prohibe injustum, & patiens esto in eo, quod acciderit tibi : quippe hoc erit ex decreto rerum.
                                                      18
                                                      18.  Et ne detorqueas genam tuam hominibus (idest, ne superbè avertas vultum tuum ab eis ) & ne incedas in terra cum fastu : quippe Deus non amat omnem arrogantem, gloriabundum.
                                                      19
                                                      19.  Et esto moderatus in incessu tuo (idest neque nimis lentus, neque nimis velox ) & deprime vocem tuam (idest loquere submissa voce ) nam fędissima vocum utique est vox asinorum.
                                                      20
                                                      21
                                                      21.  Cùmque dicitur illis : Sequimini, quod demisit Deus : Respondent : Imò sequemur id, in quo invenimus patres nostros. An verò sequerentur illud, etiamsi Satanas advocasset eos ad pœnam Tartari ?
                                                      22
                                                      23
                                                      23.  Qui verò infidelis fuerit, ne contristet te infidelitas ejus : ad nos erit reditus eorum : tunc enarravimus illis id, quod fuerint operati : nam Deus sciens est essentiam pectorum (idest interiora cordis ).
                                                      24
                                                      24.  Frui faciemus eos aliquantulùm : deindè adigemus eos ad pœnam atrocem.
                                                      25
                                                      25.  Si porrò interroges eos : Quis creavit Cœlos, & terram ? Certè respondebunt ; Deus. Dic : Laus Deo. At verò plerique eorum ignorant.
                                                      26
                                                      29
                                                      29.  Nonne considerasti, quòd Deus immittit noctem in diem, & immittit diem in noctem (idest succedere facit unum alteri ) & coegit servire vobis Solem, & Lunam.
                                                      32
                                                      32.  Cùm verò cooperuerint eos, unde velut montes umbrescentes invocabunt Deum, sinceram offerentes illi religionem.
                                                      33
                                                      33.  O homines Meccani, timete Dominum vestrum, & pavete diem, in quo non retribuet genitor pro nato suo, neque natus erit retribuens pro genitore suo quidquam (idest nulla in re poterunt se invicem adjuvare ) quippe promissio Dei est veritas. Ne ergo decipiat vos vita mundana, neque decipiat vos in Deo (idest ut avertat vos à religione Dei ) Deceptor, (idest Satanas ).
                                                      34

Mogiahed asserit, illum fuisse mancipium nigri coloris, crassis labiis, pedibus fissis. Alii volunt, fuisse fabrum lignarium : alii pastorem. Fertur, eum consuevisse quotidie portare fascem lignorum Domino suo. Ex eodem Authore habetur, illum dixisse cuidam, qui eum fixis oculis intuebatur : Si vides me habere labia crassa, scito tamen ex illis egredi sermonem subtilem. Et, si vides, me esse facie nigrum, scito tamen, me habere cor album. Ferunt hominem quemdam assedisse juxta eum, eique dixisse : An non es tu, qui pascebas mecum oves in tali loco ? respondit : Ego ille sum. At ille, quid pervenire fecit te ad id, quod video ? Respondit Locman : Vera dicere, & tacere ea, quæ mihi prodesse non poterant. Dicitur illum venisse ad David, dùm occupatus esset in texenda lorica : jamque Deus mollefecerat ei ferrum, sicut lutum. Voluit ergo Locman interrogare eum : & ingressa est in eum sapientia, & tacuit. Cùm autem David loricam absolvisset, induit se illa, & dixit : Quàm pulchrum indumentum ad prælium ! Quid tibi videtur ? At ille extraxit similiter linguam, & cor. Bedavius in hunc locum scribit eum fuisse
Utrum truncus est arboris, an homo ? Æsopi etiam cognomen, teste Gellio lib. 2. cap. 29. & aliis Scriptoribus, fuit sapientis cujusdam, quemadmodùm Locman.
Esto, vel verte : juxta rationem, & suscitationem animæ unius  : nempè velocissimè.
XXXIV.  Scientia Horæ. ] Enumerat Alcoranus quinque res, quarum scientia penes Deum tantùm est : nempe : quandò futura sit dies supremi Judicii : quandò pluvia ventura sit : quid sit in utero prægnantium, masculusne, an fœmina (alii addunt, quantum crescant, vel decrescant vulvæ) quid futurum sit die crastino : in qua terra, quis moriturus sit. Quinque claves Arcani.

II. Cùm ex ipso Mahumetanorum testimonio evidenter habeatur, Locmanem nullum alium esse, quàm Æsopum ; gratulandum est Mahumeto, quòd in Alcorani sui scenam tàm bellas personas inducat, &, quòd inter sectæ suæ sanctos Æsopum annumeret : quem, licèt apud omnes constet idololatram fuisse, Mahumetus tamen unius Dei cultorem, veræque religionis asseclam, & quidem sanctissimum, ac sapientissimum facit. Libet interim hìc Mahumetum, ut stultum contemnere, ac relinquere, & Joannem Henricum Hottingerum stultum simul, & impium convenire. Hic in historia sua Orientali, lib. pri. cap. Et apud Ismaelem filium Aly item legisset, præter hunc Locman, fuisse alium insignem ejusdem nominis virum, quemadmodum superiùs à nobis commemoratum fuit.
