La résurrection (Al-Qiyamah)
1
Non !...
23
qui regarderont leur Seigneur ;
24
31
Mais il n’a ni cru, ni fait la Salât ;
32
38
Et ensuite une adhérence Puis [Allah] l’a créée et formée harmonieusement ;
39

Note [édition originale] : bi-hi « en le disant ». Text.
        18
Quand Nous le prêchons, suis-en la prédication,
        19
ensuite, à Nous, son exposition !
Note [édition originale] : bayâna-hu « son exposition ».

Note [édition originale] : Text.
            30
vers ton Seigneur, ce jour-là, on sera poussé
            31
[et l’on criera] : « Il n’a ni cru ni prié,
            32

            The Resurrection
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
            1
No! I swear by the Day of Resurrection.
            2
No! I swear by the reproachful soul.
            3
What, does man reckon We shall not gather his bones?
            4
Yes indeed; We are able to shape again his fingers.
            5
Nay, but man desires to continue on as a libertine,
            6
asking, ‘When shall be the Day of Resurrection?’
            7
But when the sight is dazed
            8
            and the moon is eclipsed,
            9
and the sun and moon are brought together,
            10
upon that day man shall say, ‘Whither to flee?’
            11
            No indeed; not a refuge!
            12
Upon that day the recourse shall be to thy Lord.
            13
            Upon that day man shall be told his former deeds and his latter;
            14
nay, man shall be a clear proof against himself,
            15
even though he offer his excuses.
            16
            Move not thy tongue with it to hasten it;
            17
Ours it is to gather it, and to recite it.
            18
So, when We recite it, follow thou its recitation.
            19
Then Ours it is to explain it.
            20
No indeed; but you love the hasty world,
            21
            and leave be the Hereafter.
            22
Upon that day faces shall be radiant,
            23
            gazing upon their Lord;
            24
and upon that day faces shall be scowling,
            25
thou mightest think the Calamity has been wreaked on them.
            26
No indeed; when it reaches the clavicles
            27
and it is said, ‘Who is an enchanter?’
            28
and he thinks that it is the parting
            29
and leg is intertwined with leg,
            30
upon that day unto thy Lord shall be the driving.
            31
For he confirmed it not, and did not pray,
            32
but he cried it lies, and he turned away,
            33
then he went to his household arrogantly.
            34
            Nearer to thee and nearer
            35
then nearer to thee and nearer!
            36
What, does man reckon he shall be left to roam at will?
            37
Was he not a sperm-drop spilled?
            38
Then he was a blood-clot, and He created and formed,
            39
and He made of him two kinds, male and female.
            40
What, is He not able to quicken the dead?

            37
Was he not a drop of fluid which gushed forth?
            38
Then he became a clot; then (Allah) shaped and fashioned"
            39
And made of him a pair, the male and female.

              9
and the sun and the moon shall be in conjunction
              a
Note [édition originale] : And the sun and the moon shall be in conjunction;] Rising both in the west1: which conjunction is no contradiction to what is mentioned just before, of the moon’s being eclipsed; because those words are not to be understood of a regular eclipse, but metaphorically, of the moon’s losing her light at the last day in a preternatural manner. Some think the meaning rather to be, that the sun and the moon shall be joined in the loss of their light2.

for the collecting the Koran in thy mind, and the teaching thee the true reading thereof, are incumbent on us.
                18
But when we shall have read the same unto thee by the tongue of the angel, do thou follow the reading thereof:
                19
and afterwards it shall be our part to explain it unto thee.

By no means shalt thou be thus hasty for the future. But ye love that which hasteneth away
                c
Note [édition originale] : Ye love that which hasteneth away;] i.e. The fleeting pleasures of this life. The words intimate the natural hastiness and impatience of man3, who takes up with a present enjoyment, tho’ short and bitter in its consequences, rather than wait for real happiness in futurity.

Note [édition originale] : And one leg shall be joined with the other leg;] i.e. And when he shall stretch forth his legs together, as is usual with dying persons. The words may also be translated, And when one affliction shall be joined with another affliction.

Note [édition originale] : He believed not;] Or, He did not give alms; or, He was not a man of veracity. Some suppose Abu Jahl, and others one Adi Ebn Rabîa, to be particularly inveighed against in this chapter.
                    , neither did he pray;
                    32
but he accused God’s apostle of imposture, and turned back from obeying him:
                    33
then he departed unto his family, walking with a haughty mien.
                    34
Wherefore, wo be unto thee; wo!
                    35
And again, wo be unto thee; wo!
                    36
Doth man think that he shall be left at full liberty, without controul?
                    37
Was he not a drop of seed, which was emitted?
                    38
                    Afterwards he became a little coagulated blood, and God formed him, and fashioned him with just proportion;

and made of him two sexes, the male and the female.

                    V.  Id, quod est coram se. ] Idest id, quod illi evidenter ostenditur.
IX.  Et simul conjuncti fuerint Sol, & Luna. ] Itaut quemadmodùm credunt Moslemi, Sol oriatur ab Occidente : Luna verò ab Oriente.
XVII.  Ne moveas in eo linguam tuam. ] Explicat Gelal : لا تحرك بالقران قبل فراغ جبراييل منه لسانك لتعجل به خوف ان ينفلت منك ان علينها جمعة في صدرك وقراتك اياه اى جريانه على لسانك فاذا قراناه عليك بقراة جبراييل فاتبع قراته اي استمع قرانه فكان رسول الله ص يستمع ثم يقرؤه Ne moveas in Alcorano legendo, seu repetendo, linguam tuam, antequàm absolverit Gabriel verba ejus, ut acceleres eum, ob timorem, ne ille avolet à te : nam nostrum erit colligere eum in pectore tuo (idest redigere eum tibi totum in memoriam) & legere eum tibi ; idest facere, ut lingua tua facilè proferat eum. Vah nugas ! Admirare porrò hìc lector divinam illam, quam adeò jactant Moslemi, Alcorani connexionem. Quid, oro, hæc cum præcedentibus, & sequentibus ?
XXIX.  Et conjunxerit se crus cum crure. ] Notat actum naturalem morientium, dùm crura extendunt, simulque conjungunt.
XXXI.  Porrò non credidit. ] Quæ Gelal putat hìc dici de homine malo, & impio in communi : Jahias, & alii censent, esse scommata, & sarcasmata in Abugehelum infensissimum Mahumeto, quantumvis sanguine conjunctum.
                      R
                      Note [édition originale] : REFUTATIONES.
Hinc apparet, Mahumetum nullum Alcoranum apud se habuisse.
IV. Postremò, si Mahumetus à trigesimo primo versu, juxta explicationem Gelalis, & aliorum, Abugechelum cognatum suum, quamvis sibi infensum, mordet, ac lacerat ; consanguinitatis leges prorsùs transgreditur ; &, ut suprà notavi, Satyristam se, non Legislatorem demonstrat.

LE CHAPITRE DE LA RESURRECTION, contenant quarante versets,
                        escrit à la Meque.
AU nom de Dieu clement & misericordieux.
                        1
                        2
                        Je jure que les meschans rendront compte de leurs actions ;
                        3
                        6

On luy dira, tu n’as point d’autre refuge
                        12
                        qu’en Dieu ;
                        13
                        14
                        & sera tesmoin contre soy-mesme :
                        16
                        19
                        & te l’ay fait comprendre ;

                            33
Melius autem, melius illi esset credidisse.
                            36
